Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) of the Republic of Turkey provides assistance to 3,600 drought affected households in western and northern Afghanistan.

Turkey continues to stand by the Government and brotherly people of Afghanistan to cope with the disastrous impact of the drought which has affected 1.4 million Afghans so far. The assistance by AFAD focuses on delivering vital food assistance to the most vulnerable, including the internally displaced people who fled to Herat from the neighbouring provinces like Badghis and Ghor.

Further deterioration in the harvests and livestock losses put the livelihoods of thousands of households at risk. The food packages containing vegetable oil, grains, pulses, salt and other nutritious foods have been distributed to the almost 1,100 drought displaced households in Herat on 13-14 August 2018. To prevent further displacement and malnourishment of the drought affected families, AFAD will also deliver food assistance to the provinces in Northern Afghanistan.

AFAD’s assistance responds to the appeal by the Government of Afghanistan and the United Nations for provision of a rapid response from international community. In order to mitigate the implications of the drought in the upcoming period, Turkey will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to people in need in coordination with the Government of Afghanistan and other humanitarian and development stakeholders.
