Chargé d'Affaires & Head of Mission

Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Kabul

Mr. Cenk Ünal is a senior career diplomat at the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Ünal joined the Turkish Foreign Service in 1997 and serves as the Chargé d'Affaires & Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Kabul since October 1, 2023.

Prior to assuming his office in Kabul, he served as the Deputy Director General for International Organizations in Asia, from 2021 to 2023.

Mr. Ünal’s previous duties at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs include NATO and Euro-Atlantic Security and Defense Affairs Department, Balkans & Central Europe Department and Deputy Directorate General for Information. From 2020 to 2021, Mr. Ünal was the Head of Department at Deputy Directorate General for South Asia, in charge of bilateral relations with Afghanistan.

Mr. Ünal also served in various foreign missions of the Republic of Türkiye such as Turkish Embassies in Belgrade, Budapest and Islamabad, as well as the Consulate General in Jerusalem.

He was the Consul General of the Republic of Türkiye in Nakhchivan between 2011 and 2013. He also served as the Deputy Head of Mission in the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Türkiye to the Office of United Nations in Vienna from 2018-2020.

Born in 1972 in Ankara, Mr. Ünal studied Economics and holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations.

Mr. Ünal is married with one child and speaks English.
