President Erdoğan’s Message on May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day
Following is the message President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued on May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day:
“On May 19, 1919, which symbolizes the beginning of our War of Independence, Our glorious nation declared to the entire world it would protect its free will, independence and future under all conditions.
The fire of independence, ignited in Samsun, was the herald of independence for our nation. That unequaled fight, waged in unity and solidarity, with resolve, courage, determination and faith, was crowned with the foundation of our Republic.
Our War of Independence, during which our nation eliminated at the cost of their lives all the threats targeting our homeland and flag, also set an example for other nations which were fighting to gain their independence.
The fact that May 19, which symbolizes our War of Independence, was declared as Youth and Sports Day highlights the importance attached to our youth, our hope and the insurance of our future.
Our youth, raised with a sense of independence, uphold their history, adhere to their national values, and are equipped and qualified in all aspects, which makes them the fundamental factor in carrying our country beyond the level of contemporary civilizations.
We take pride in lowering the minimum candidacy age in our country to 18 as a tangible indicator of the trust we place in our youth in politics and administration.
We are happy to see that our youth preserve the will, determination and faith which led our War of Independence to victory.
We support our youth with all our means and capabilities, and believe that they will protect our glorious homeland, entrusted to us by our ancestors, in the best way, and defend our independence and future at the cost of their lives if necessary.
I congratulate the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day. I remember with grace all our heroes who fought for our homeland, particularly Ghazi Mustafa Kemal and his brothers in arms. I salute all our youth and citizens with my sincerest feelings.”
