We welcome UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s appointment of Staffan de Mistura, a diplomat experienced in the settlement of regional disputes, as his Special Envoy for Syria.

It has become ever more important to put an end to the atrocities conducted by the Assad regime, which drag Syria and its people to an unprecedented destruction, and which foster the threats of extremism and terrorism, and to reach a political resolution that meets the legitimate demands and expectations of the Syrian people.

As it has done in the past, Turkey will continue to support the efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Syria with a view to giving impetus to the political process that it considers to be the only solution for the dispute in Syria and to play a pioneering and constructive role in this process.
